Storage volumes and backups

Attach storage, manage backup capacity, and understand what each storage type is for.

Services / Storage

Choose the right storage feature for the job

Use backups for recovery. Use storage volumes when you need persistent capacity attached to a workload. Object storage is still planned and should not be treated as generally available yet.

Availability note

Backups and provisioned storage volumes are available today. Object storage remains planned until it is documented as available.

Storage volumes, backups, and planned object storage

Storage has two main workflows available today: backups for supported VPS services, and provisioned storage volumes that can be attached to workloads. Object storage is still planned.

Available now: VPS backup operations

  • View backup state for a supported VPS.
  • Configure backup schedule settings.
  • Start or cancel backup runs.
  • Track backup progress and restore progress.
  • Restore from backup.
  • Delete backup files when cleanup is required.

Available now: provisioned storage volumes

  • List storage volume services assigned to your account.
  • Check which VPS services are eligible attach targets.
  • Attach a detached volume to a VPS.
  • Detach a volume from its current VPS.
  • Rename volume metadata for clearer ownership and purpose.

Planned

  • Volume growth and additional storage options should be treated as release-specific until they are documented.
  • Object storage is planned and is not yet a documented generally available customer workflow.

How to choose the right storage feature

  • Use backups when the goal is recovery.
  • Use volume services when the goal is persistent capacity that can move with the workload lifecycle.
  • Use an external object store today if your application already depends on object-storage behavior.

Customer expectation setting

Use the feature that matches the job. Backups are for recovery. Volumes are for attached capacity. Planned object storage should not be used in production plans until it is available.
